Hotel Buena Vista is located about 15 kms north of the international airport of Alajuela on the flanks of the Poas volcano.

The hotel offers 11 deluxe standard rooms, 11 superior rooms with private balconies overlooking the Central Valley and the volcanoes, 3 spaceous Junior Suites and 5 large villas, which are seperate units with a bedroom, living area and private balcony located in the nicely landscaped hotelgardens. This makes Hotel Buena Vista the ideal place to start yur a Costa Rica tour offering a good intriduction to birdwatching in Costa Rica. Thanks to the open character of the environment the birding in the garden is relatively easy and one can expect to see some of the more common Costa Rica birds like the Clay-colored Thrush, Great Kiskadee, Tropical Kingbird, Blue-gray and Palm Tanager, Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds, Buff-throated Saltator, Grayish Saltator, Inca Doves, Hoffman’s Woodpecker, White-winged Doves and Rufous-collared Sparrows. During the northern winter also Baltimore Orioles and several warbler species like Tennessee Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler and Yellow Warbler can be seen also…Blue-crowned Motmot should be around eventhough not always easy to see..paying attantion this his “whoop whoop” sound helps spotting this beautifull bird. The coffee trails can sometimes produce other interesing species like Rufous-capped Warbler, Plain Wren, White-eared Ground-sparrow, Squirrel Cuckoo, Yellow-throated Euphonias and even Golden-browed Chlorophonias has been reported here…Both Crimson-fronted Parakeet and White-crowned Parrots are quite common and often seen flying overhaed. White-tailed Kite and Short-tailed Hawk are most common raptors. At night and even sometimes during the day time a Ferruginous Pygmee-owl can sometimes be heard…Besides birds you will most probably see also Variegated Squirrels…they are very common in the trees around the coffee plantation and can’t be missed…
