.: Knowledge of our destination and customized trips:
Since we operate from Costa Rica and Pieter regulary is out guiding, we are in very close contact with the different destinations we offer. We therefore have a very thorough knowledge of the country and its touristic infrastructure. This allows us to design high-quality trips taking into account our client's specific needs and desires.

Besides that Pieter is a passionate birdwatcher and very familiar with geographic distribution of birdspecies in Costa Rica. We will be glad to advice you on and help you organize and desgn your trip with special target species.

.: Small-scale business and alternative destinations:
We are a small business consisting our of Pieter Westra and father Jan Westra, specializing in birdwatching and nature trips in Costa Rica. We always try to make unique trips by including alternative, less visited destinations and hotels and combining them with some more classical destinations (they are classics for a reason...). After all, a nature lover will enjoy much more the quiet, less visited hotels and destinations...

Because we focus on a small market of birdwatchers and nature lovers we avoid mass-tourism, which allows us to give our full attention to our clients: before and during their trip.

.: Customer support and communication before and during the trip:
We are convinced that for a succesfull trip a clear and thorough communication is needed and therefore stimulate our clients to send us as much specific information about their needs and desires as possible. Once our clients agree on trip itinerary we send a detailed information package with practical information about travelling in Costa Rica, background information about the different destinations in the trip and a detailed roadmap.

At arrival on the airport in Costa Rica we will welcome our clients by an English-speaking representative of Aratinga Tours and transfer them to their first hotel.

During their stay in Costa Rica the Aratinga Tours office can be reached 24 hours a day, where an English-speaking person will attend you.

Sustainable Tourism

Aratinga Tours is aware of the negative effects of the tourism industry on the natural environment, local culture and socio-economic situation. Very often tourism is a source of income being exploited unlimitless; natural areas disappear for large hotel chains, in which the big profit usually stays in the hands of multi-nationals, while locals are hardly involved. Besides that environmental problems related to waste and waterpollution start to come to the surface. By trying to make a big profit on the short term tourrism on the long term becomes impossible; since tourism depends on the natural beauty and clean air and water.

Therefore Aratinga Tours tries to adopt a type of sustainable tourism in which the natural environment and local people are respected. This will allow future generations to also enjoy Costa Rica's natural beauty.

.: Visiting nature preserves = contributing to local nature conservation:
By providing acces and collecting entree-fees from visitors, a rainforest is given an economical value and natural areas become exploitable in a non-destructive way. Local guides, souvenirshops, restaurants and hotels around the protected natural area create work for locals, which in turn generates local support for nature conservation.

With Aratinga Tours we try to stimulate our clients to visit as much National Parks and other nature preserves as possible. This is not only a unique natural experience but also a way to contribute to the local nature conservation.

.: Involvment of locals:

We avoid the big all-inclusive hotels and try to work with small-scale hotels and lodges with their own unique character managed and owned by locals, who share our ideas about sustainable tourism.
We try to work with local guides as much as possible in order to stimulate the local economy.
We always work with touroperators and transport providers owned by locals.

.: Support local projects:
We not only talk about nature conservation; we also act… Aratinga Tours uses part of its profit to support the Great Green Macaw project in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. Besides that Aratinga Tours is an official sponser of the Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica.
